The netbooks running Cedar Trail M are expected to make their debut sometime in the month of November this year (2011) and it will exciting to see if Acer and Samsung pick these up for their chromebooks. Let us hope Google does something about this operating system to make it matter to other laptop manufactures.

The amazing folks at hexxeh have now made the VDI files public which means anyone with a copy of Virtualbox can now install Chromium / Chrome OS on to their computer. To use this VDI files, just install VirtualBox and create a new virtual machine in it. Download a VDI file.

The links to the VDI file are given at the bottom of this post. Download it and extract it. When the app asks you if you want to create a new a hard disk drive for the new OS or use existing one, just browse for the VDI file that you downloaded earlier.

It will then ask you how much memory you would like to assign the the image. Go for 2GB if you have 4GB or more RAM on your computer. Otherwise, even 1GB is more than enough for him. [download link]

Over the past month, Google has enjoyed moderate success with its Chromebook, aka Chromium netbooks. Since it runs a not-so-beefy operating system based on Linux, it does not requires a lot of horsepower to run. However, Google will be adding a lot functionality into it which might slow down things a little bit and it order to prevent that, Google will be swapping the current Atom N570 to Core i series processors.

All of the current Chromebook manufactures (Asus, Acer and Samsung) have agreed to Google’s decision and will be rolling out these upgraded models in 2012. However, the concerning thing here is the price tag. Since the core i series processors costs 2x (and in some cases 3x) than the Atom processors, the price of the Chromebooks will cross 500 dollars. Consumers will be unlikely to shell out 500 dollars for an OS that does a little more than just allowing you to surf the Internet.

It may surprise you but Chromebooks have VPN functionality built in. However, it is still a beta feature and is deactivated by default. Here are the steps to activate it. Type in about:flags in the address bar and enable "VPN support" from the list of experiments.

Then, you can easily add layer 2 tunneling protocol (l2tp) and other related features easily. Right now, Chromium OS only supports L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key and user certificate. In my testing, it worked with Windows Server and Cisco, but since it is still an ‘experimental’ feature, it may not work with all of them.

Entire Chrome OS team has laid out plans on how the Chromium’s future will turn out to be. The company desires not only to be successful in the netbook world but also on tablets and notebooks. One of the many notes posted on Chromium projects site says that the UI effects will require hardware acceleration and other visual effects such as pixel shaders. This means that the future graphics will be used on OpenGL and Direct3D.

The Google Chromium netbook, CR-48 comes with built in Gobi wireless chip that is perfectly capable of connecting to various GSM networks, but Google has coded it to work with only some mobile broadband protocols.

Google has now unleashed an update for the Chromium OS that would allow you to enable GSM support with the AT&T network as well. Here are the instructions:

Pop your SIM card into the slot under the battery (must be a full-size SIM, microSIMs you’ll just lose in there, fine if you use an adaptor though)

Make sure you’ve enabled developer mode – do this by flipping the switch under your battery

Once you’re booted into developer mode and logged in, press Control-Alt-T

This opens crosh, a limited command shell. Since we’re in developer mode, we can get a full shell. Type the word shell and press enter.

You’ll get a shell that starts with ‘chronos@localhost / $’. Once you’ve got this, we can type in the command that flips over to GSM.

Type the following command: modem_set_carrier “Generic UMTS”

Wait a couple of minutes, then you can exit the shell by typing exit twice.

Your 3G should be usable assuming you have an active service plan on that SIM card, and that ChromeOS knows your APN settings.

Keep in mind that the carrier name will not appear in the user interface. Also, the APN details have to be hardcoded. See the list here.
