Celeron powered Samsung Series 5 Chromium Netbook

While a slew of laptop companies released Celeron powered Windows notebooks last year, none released a Celeron powered Chromium netbook – until now. Samsung has released an Intel Celeron based Series 5 Chromebook. This new budget processor powered netbook replaces the Atom N570 dual core chip that was used in the previous model.

Samsung has released a new Series 5 Chromium netbook just in time for Christmas. This new model, XE500C21-A04US, features a 12.1 inch display and come with 2x USB 2.0 ports, SD card slot – all packed in a frame that is mere 0.79 inches thick.

This Samsung chromebook uses Superbright technology that is 36 percent more brighter than an ‘ordinary’ LCD display. Information about its processor is not available, but we do know that it has a dual core processor by Intel.

Acer AC700 price drop

Acer has reduced the price of its Chromium netbook, AC700. Earlier, it was being retailed for 350 dollars, but now the company is selling it for just 300 dollars on sites like Amazon. For those who do not know, AC700 is one of the first Chromebooks and it ships with Google Chromium operating system instead of windows 7 starter that is widely used in Atom powered netbooks.

The amazing folks at hexxeh have now made the VDI files public which means anyone with a copy of Virtualbox can now install Chromium / Chrome OS on to their computer. To use this VDI files, just install VirtualBox and create a new virtual machine in it. Download a VDI file.

Core i Series Chromebook

Over the past month, Google has enjoyed moderate success with its Chromebook, aka Chromium netbooks. Since it runs a not-so-beefy operating system based on Linux, it does not requires a lot of horsepower to run. However, Google will be adding a lot functionality into it which might slow down things a little bit and it order to prevent that, Google will be swapping the current Atom N570 to Core i series processors.

Chromium Netbooks and Cloud computing

Google Chromium netbooks have already hit the market and are being sold for a fairly decent price tag to attract the casual users. I never received my Google Cr-48 (even after repeated requests to Google) so I cannot say for sure if I can store everything in the servers up there in the cloud completely, but I did use Chrome web browser on my laptop to do everything that I normally do on my computer.
